Have you ever had a piece of Teflon cookware? It is awesome! Foods that would typically stick to another kind of pan just slide right out of one coated with Teflon. And, clean up is a snap. Just wipe out any residue and voila, it’s gone!
After many uses, however, the Teflon surface can become marred or scratched and when that happens, foods start to stick. The more things stick, the more we tend to scrape at the surface to remove them, which only causes more marring and more sticking.
When we were born, we were like that brand new Teflon pan all slick and mar-free. As we grew and people bumped into us with their attitudes towards us, the words that were spoken to us, and the actions taken against us, we received some scrapes and gouges. Comments, even innocent ones, spoken by parents, siblings or other family members stick to us, sometimes for a lifetime. Not being chosen to play a school-yard game leaves a mar. Rejection from a young love, another scrape. Pretty soon, the surface of our hearts is no longer slick and free from residue.
The wonderful thing, however, about how we are made is that we can choose to let our hearts be refinished. Forgiveness releases what has been stuck to our souls. We can be wiped clean by the Holy Spirit. Afterwards, things cannot stick to us unless we choose to let them. There will always be plenty of opportunity for things to stick. We still live around other people who will accidentally, or sometimes intentionally, hurt us or scrape us. We have life experiences that are difficult and leave scars, but we don’t have to let any of that mar the surface of our hearts again.
Be like Teflon. Refuse to let things stick to the old scrapes and wounds of your life and prevent future hurts from sticking to you by choosing to forgive and release them. Exercise your freedom of choice and live FREE!
