I’m sitting here this Saturday morning reflecting on my very busy work week and rejoicing in the knowledge that I have two days to relax, be restored and refreshed before I have to go back to work on Monday. I actually never thought I would ever be in the workforce when I first started my married life some 35 years ago. My plan for my life was to marry, have children and be a stay at home Mom the rest of my life. Oh, how surprised I was when after enjoying that privilege for 13 years with my three daughters, I was forced into the working world because my husband was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. Praise God! He is alive today and cancer free, but complications from the cancer have kept him disabled and so my working career began.
I questioned God as to why my “Perfect Plan” wasn’t going to work the way I wanted it to? What could I possibly do to support my family with a two year degree as a Medical Assistant 13 years after I graduated from college? “Hold on, I heard Him say and watch where we will go”! Ladies, some 20 years later, it has been a ride of trials, faith and great trust, but God and I are still going strong! I can tell you that most of my employers over the years have not exactly been the most generous or easy to work for. Most of the last 20 years I have either been in Education or Dentistry, both are worlds dominated by woman. Now, if we are honest, we all know that woman can be pretty darn competitive, petty, judgemental and unkind to each other. However, I found that an awesome thing happens in the working world when you enter each day trusting God!I have learned that as I keep my eyes on Him and I allow His characteristics to live through me all the office drama and nonsense are blocked out and I don’t allow it to affect my job performance.
Over the years I have wondered why God would give me a job where there was nothing but total chaos, unfairness and unprofessionalism. With each passing day I have grown to understand that I was placed in these positions to bring a sense of order, peace and joy. As I look back at my professional career I understand that by choosing to do the “Right Thing”, even though it was extremely difficult at times, God has elevated me and continues to place me in positions where I am able to make a positive impact on other woman whose lives who just needed a lot of love, trust and nurturing guidance. I have grown to understand that just because you have a four or eight or Doctorate degree doesn’t mean that you know how to deal with people and relationships. I love people and I love to see personal growth through relationships. Sometimes just a few words of encouragement to a nasty co-worker or employer can make all the difference in the world.
Bottom line, Ladies! Life is what we choose for it to be. Whether it’s your personal or your professional life, you’re in charge of how great or how horrible it will be. I was handed a life that I had not planned, as I know so many of you were. I decided long ago that if I had to work, then I was going to give it 110% every day of my life. Every day God gives me the choice to work with a “Spirit of Excellence” or a “Spirit of Strife”. I choose life with excellence every day! My philosophy for my life is simply this: On any given day in another person’s life, I might be the only smile or encouraging word that they hear. I might be their only hope to a problem they are experiencing, so I better have a positive word and a joy in my presence that makes a difference. I can’t think of a nicer gift to give every single day of my life! Be blessed and have an impacting life!
